Foxtail Millet (Thinai) is the definitive, historically accurate millet inseparable from Lord Murugan.
In Tamil tradition, the sacred offering is explicitly Thenum Thinai Maavum (Foxtail Millet Flour with Honey),
tied directly to the story of Goddess Valli guarding the Thinai fields.
While Little Millet (Samai) belongs to the same family of ancient hill grains (Sirudhanyangal), substituting it misses that exact,
deep mythological connection unique to Foxtail Millet.
Here is how Foxtail Millet (Thinai) holds its supreme, singular place in Murugan worship:
The Legend of Valli and the Thinai Fields
According to the Kanda Puranam, Goddess Valli was raised by the king of the mountain Kuravar tribe.
Her daily duty was to sit on a raised wooden platform (Paran) in the mountain fields, throwing stones to scare
away birds from eating the ripening Foxtail Millet (Thinai) crops. It was during this crop-guarding ritual that
Lord Murugan disguised himself to meet her, and she offered him freshly pounded Thinai flour mixed
with wild forest honey.
Specific Ritual Uses for Lord Murugan
Because of this divine love story, Foxtail Millet is utilized in very specific ways across temples like Palani,
Tiruttani, and Tiruchendur:
- ✓Thenum Thinai Maavu: Foxtail millet grains are washed, shade-dried, lightly roasted, and pulverized.
- ✓This flour is mixed with honey, ghee, and cardamom to create an uncooked, raw Prasadam representing
- ✓the primal mountain lifestyle.
- ✓Abhishekam Offering: In many traditional hill shrines, raw Thinai flour is used during the holy bath (Abhishekam) of the deity.
- ✓Valli Kalyanam Reenactment: During festival reenactments of Murugan and Valli’s divine wedding,
- ✓Thinai Maavu is ritually prepared and distributed to devotees to celebrate their union.
- ✓Storage Instructions:
- ✓ Transfer contents immediately upon opening into a clean, dry, and airtight container.
- ✓Keep away from moisture, humidity, and direct sunlight to maximize freshness.
